Remembering Zimbabwe

It's funny how little things can bring a RUSH of a memory to you... whether it is a certain smell, an object, something somebody said, or just a word.

When I was in high school - I believe it was 10th grade. I went on a mission trip with my grandmother, Nain we called her (it's Welch for grandma). It was a phenomenal, life changing three and a half weeks! And both Nain and I did it with ABSOLUTELY no luggage - as it got "taken" in Zambia.

I was in The Village of the Arts - a local art community here two years ago and stepped in to this studio... I could NOT believe what I saw... a simple painting of someone dancing in red... only it looked like they were coming down a hill... it brought me right back to Zimbabwe and I HAD to have the painting... it is hanging in our family room - a place of honor.

And now today I am checking out some of my favorite fabric sites (looking for sales they are advertising) and I came across some fabric that again... just flooded my mind with memories from this wonderful, exciting trip.

These fabric swatches remind me so much of my time with my Nain (my grandma) in Zimbabwe, Africa... amazing. They always wore such mix-matchy clothes and carrying EVERYTHING on their heads.

But I will NEVER... no NEVER forget that woman... running down the hill singing in her native tongue and praising God we were finally there (the bus was ALWAYS late due to road conditions and being late everywhere else)...that sun setting behind her and the hill and her red dress just A GLOW - on FIRE... What a blessed, miraculous site.  These fabric swatches both remind me of her, my Nain, and my life changing time in Zimbabwe.

This one - I think it reminded me because it was the lady in red dancing...

(I had nice large images... but apparently the blog didn't like those.... so when i order the fabric - I can take a better photo)

But it is this one that is the REAL one that caught my eye....brings back HUGE memories!

Hmmmm... maybe I will make something with them? Just as a reminder...

Crickets

chirp chirp chirp...

It's very quiet. A nice quiet... you know? You know... like in a comedy where... the sound of crickets may be used to humorously indicate a dead silence when a response or activity is expected??

Well our house has become that comedy... it cracks me up! You see we have two leopard geckos now.
Meet Zeela and Lily.
Zeela
Lily
They are really pretty darn cute! Surprisingly CUTE!
And when we first got them they had to eat tiny crickets - tiny crickets don't chirp... Now as our geckos (Zeela and Lily) grow bigger...they need bigger crickets!!  And these lovely larger crickets well they just CHIRP CHIRP CHIRP away... at all times... alllll times. At times I find it rather soothing... others... let's just say it can drive you a bit bonkers. Mr Safety Man wants to go back to lil' crickets. It definitely drives him BONKERS!

Working late at night - the sound actually really is pleasant to me. It reminds me of my grandparents houses... in upstate NY. Just quiet lovely sounds...

Quiet. Chirp. Quiet. Chirp...Chirp...chirp.

PHOTOS of MADE HERE craft/art show!

mArrineR's monTage booth!
OK - so after writing such a long, long post before (hey when it's quiet and I start thinking... I really start thinking!) here are some photos from the show... there are NOT that many - but at least there are some! I won't complain - because it was so busy - we didn't really have time to take many photos!!! ;)

I am so glad I did the show. Can't wait to continue on with the path for mArrineR's monTage!!!

Sideview of booth and first customer!

Aprons, skirts, dresses, porcelain earrings, bird domes & more!

Me talking away with a customer!

After school Boo and Sweetpea came to help - Boo was under our table making me cards

...and playing with worms. Sweetpea was making crafts elsewhere

Smile!

We are "official" now! (these came the very next day... oh well!)
I wish we had taken more photos of the whole show... but it was busy (a GOOD thing) and we wanted to focus on the customers!

GREAT FIRST 'Solo' show for us!

Quiet...

I finally have some quiet. Some time to reflect, some time to ponder, some time to really think. It's been such a crazy few weeks... as if you couldn't tell from lack of posts!! I haven't really had much quiet time...Even when I've been by myself late nights (which has been every night the last 2-3 weeks working in my studio) it has not been quiet. My brain just has been buzzin' with things I have to do, what needs to get done, what schedule I have to keep. So having a bit of just "me" time - just time to sit, relax, and think...has been good. Short. But good.

I am truly trying to get our lil' online Etsy store - www.mArrineRsmonTage.etsy.com  /company up and running. Right now it is just a little dream - but ultimately I would love to do something big with it -  I'm not sure where it will take me but I can't wait to grow with it. I've found what makes my soul sing... and interestingly enough - I found it through such a dark and horrific time in our family's lives. And yet something beautiful blossomed from that time.

Being creative is just a blessing to me. This summer I sewed my heart out along with my sister. We cried tears, sang songs, laughed, cried some more, hugged, remembered, loved, and started our healing process all with an idea I had for some sundresses for the girls & "Adventure Bags" for all 5 of the kiddos. It helped. It made me focus on something other than the numbing pain of losing my little nephew Andrew, but first Mr Safety-Man's mom, and then of course Mr Safety-Man's dad the day of Andrew's funeral. I could pour energy in to those stitches I was doing. I could feel all my emotions and sort through them if I wanted - or just "phase out" if I didn't. (And ask my sister... I certainly phased out a bunch - I think I sewed my sleeve to one of the dresses a few times. My excuse - it was rather late!!!).

All this has brought me to realize - that I love to sew, I love to create, I love to use my hands and work with my clay. And I want to do this and share it.  It is a very 'soulful' fulfilling feeling to realize something you want to do. Something that makes my heart really sing. And owning my own company - doing something I love to do... that's my dream. My goal for later... well let's just say it will start with making my first quilt and move to some day being the designer of a fabric that someone else might use for their quilt!!

Early this spring I was invited to participate in the first craft show at the PAC - a local art center here. One of the ladies that put it together and I had become friends through another art show we both were featured - at the PAC. I saw her just before Christmas and she had this wonderful idea...a craft show of just local artists - right before Mother's Day!  I told her to GO for it! MADE HERE craft/art show was born! It was a fantastic idea and we are planning to do it semi-annually  - November and end of April now.

There were not a ton of vendors and it was all local talent. I felt honored to be among some wonderful artists represented. I was super excited and super anxious at the same time. I worked my tookus off...I wanted to make Mr Safety-Man proud, my family proud, and my friends. I wanted to let Mr. Safety Man know that I could do this and follow through and be serious about my commitment to our company - mArrineR's monTage. I wanted to achieve my goal and perhaps even make myself proud again in the process?

The craft show was Friday April 29th... there was a lot of work for mArrineR's monTage to get ready - we really had a tight schedule and both Mr Safety-man and I worked on a lot of inventory, on set-up, on props for the booth, etc.  A LOT OF WORK. But it was worth it in the end! I tried to handle the stress before our first "solo" booth. I didn't do half bad (well at least I think... Mr Safety Man may have different thoughts on that one...) - but I really have to thank my family for their patience with me. The girls were SUPER troopers and really helped us a lot and understood that a lot of time was going towards that. They were my BIGGEST fans and their parting words in the AM... "You can do it Mommy! SELL A LOT MOMMY!!" and they DID give me confidence!

Set-up was a bit difficult for me. I wanted everything perfect and I realized that it would have to be what it was. I think in the end... it turned out well. It made me laugh that I thought I would NEVER be able to fill a 6 foot table and in reality I think I needed a larger one!!!

The people just kept coming. During the show I think I can remember only a few lulls - and even then - there were still customers walking around. Mr Safety-man took off work to be with me after reffing two hockey games. It meant more to me than I can explain having him there to support me.

Loads of our friends came to support us. And for that mArrineR's monTage - all are truly thankful! I wouldn't be where I am without our friends. We got calls, e-mails, and texts from people that wish they could be there but supported us by thinking of us. Those meant a lot to us as well.

It was a great experience. I learned a lot, we networked, we learned certain things to say and what not to say, we sold items (YAY!), we received some knowledge, we taught our children some valuable lessons, and we spent time together as a family.

Everything that day/eve REALLY was a learning experience- really great learning experience.
I sit, thinking, and realize... no matter how anxious I got,  this day really was a wonderful one.

Was it all worth it?

Yes. Good times. Good memories. Can't wait for the next one!!

Giddy doesn't even cover it folks...

Ok things are good today... I haven't felt like this in so long. It is amazing how one lil' thoughtful thing (ok not so lil') but one thing can make you feel soooo stinkin' good and then reflecting on the rest of the week... well I am blessed.

Let's face it - it's been a long road lately. This week - I had a couple little scarey post-op moments on Thursday (was that really yesterday?) morning (started Wednesday night) but seemed to get better after I rested.
Then the best news...at the post-op appointment Thursday:
BENIGN

Oh music so sweet to mine ears... but seriously it was... I hadn't realized that I've been holding my breath since we originally received the words explaining that I had this growth! But phhhheeew there it all went out after I saw...in black and white... typed across the page...BENIGN - in one big exhale. That is a super long time to hold your breath folks. A realllllly long time!! Apparently my 'growth' was Dr M's "problem polyp"! HA! Well there ya go! So there Dr M! Pfffblll! Teach you for trying to remove it without anesthetic! HA!  I have to grow them bigger and better and most problematic - because heck - that's how I am!! Gotta be unique right??

But then... Thursday after the good news appointment, while I was struggling with a new pattern...ahem (excuse me)... while I was engaging myself in creating a new pattern - my WONNNNNNNDERFUL, super thoughtful, endearing, gorgeous, attentive, caring, husband of the year - Mr Safety Man surprised me with  a gift of one of my dreams...

No folks... not pregnant again (darn) - but another super, awesome thing!!!

 GOT
        A
           MAC
                    BOOK
                               PRO!!!!!!!
o yeah...doing the cocky happy dance... oh yeah... i'm giddddyyyy... look at meeeeee oh yeahhh!!!!
you may all be jealous... that's ok - really.
I was once like you.

hehehehehe ok ok ok ok - sorry... just. so. stinkin'. goofy with giddiness (for a change).
It is a nice feeling to have finally again!!! I missed it. And it's not just because I got something... but because my Mr Safety Man thought of me...knew me... worked on this for awhile to help me be happy. To give me some joy...

THANK YOU SWEET Mr Safety Man... I absolutely adore you!!!!

Oh how I have coveted MACs... oh how I have dreamed about owning a MAC!!! And I got one!  Mr Safety man  bought me a "sparkly" (a story for another time)...needless to say it doesn't go around my neck or on my finger... but looks beautifully under my fingers as I type!!! I love my early mommy's day, anniversary, Christmas, & birthday gift!!! hahahahah

Usually when Mr Safety Man gives me an unexpected, HUGE prezzie... I don't know how to handle it well and I call him something that is not so nice. NOT to be mean... it just slips... like when he gave me my first car... after only being together for 4 months... " oh youuuuu... poop - I can't believe you did this"  came from these beautiful lips... not my finest moments... BUT like I said... I don't know how to handle big surprises I guess...

SOooooo yesterday upon receiving this wonderful...dashing... creme de la creme surprise?? I just plain cried. I was actually speechless... (and so was he - he felt sure I was going to call him some bad name again or something...and actually had to make sure I was happy)!! Imagine that?

So I've been playing... and my girls have been playing... and I took my beloved MAC - like a newborn baby  - my 3rd child -  to my resident Apple guru - Amy and we played some more and I soaked in her teachings. And her wonderful friend iTech Mick helped me some more... and I am just soooooooooooooooooo excited... sooooo pumped! And my sweet, Sweetpea made me a Keynote presentation on my beloved MAC (and if I figure out how to post it on my MAC... I will do so soon because it is the sweetest thing EVAHHhhhhhh). I think my MAC has been just as exciting for my girlies as it has been for me. But o dear sweet children of mine- THIS IS MOMMMMY'S and ONLY MOMMY'S MAC... Sorry but I shall not share. And guess what? I don't have to!!!! ;}
I am in the cool club now folks...
watch me fly today...it's rather nice up here -i've missed this feeling!!
 wish you were me don'tcha?

Goofing around with the photo booth application!!!

I LOVE MY NEW MAC!!!!!
Thank you so much my sweet, caring Mr Safety Man!!! I LOVE YOU!!!

How am I doing?

I want to say great! PHYSICALLY - I am feeling a lot better... but emotionally...sigh....
My sister, Cyndi,  is starting to write again. She has gone back to her blog after more than a year off...
She is a wonderful writer/poet. Her words are like how I feel fabric or clay is to me - a way to express ourselves and combined make a masterpiece. I am proud of her for this first step. I read this from my sister and here is my comment to her post. Fair warning... they aren't easy reads. Cynn is using this to help her through our family's terrible tragedy of losing Andrew, her 6yr old twin son. We are all just shells. We are all still trying to find a way to heal. It never goes away. We put on brave faces... We support each other and love each other. We are a resilient family. Yep - I like that choice of word dear, sweet, sister... we walk this road together.
